Welcome
Welcome GREEN MOUNT
GREEN MOUNTAIN RED ANGUSAIN RED ANGUS
Welcome to Green Mountain RED Angus
Welcome to our 20th annual bull sale! Green Mountain Red Angus began selling bulls by pri-
vate treaty in 1988, went on to have a silent auction format opening day of private treaty sales
in 1993, and in 2000 achieved our goal of holding a live auction. It was always the dream of
Bob’s father, Jim, to see his bulls sell through a live auction at the ranch, but unfortunately, he
passed away in November of 1999, just a few short months before our fi rst bull sale. Bob and
I somehow made it through, fi nished preparations, and held a very successful inaugural sale.
Looking back, we have come a long way. When Bob’s father left us, we had 102 registered Red
Angus cows and 31 replacement heifers. Over the past 20 years we have more than doubled
that number. We have gone from a couple of kids that were hoping for the best on March 21,
2000, to hosting our 20th annual sale this year. We are now watching our sons take part in the
family ranch and being an integral part in the success of Green Mountain Red Angus.
We continue to grow our herd slowly and our goal is to be able to provide a larger number
of bulls for your consideration, while still maintaining strict culling standards. We strive to
combine the genotype with the phenotype in the most complete package we can, and we
believe you will fi nd that in this year’s bull crop. We raise cattle to be able to work in some of
the harshest conditions and still thrive, keeping an eye towards functionality.
Tom, Jim, Julie and Bob Morton The bulls offered in this catalog provide some of the best genetic opportunities you will fi nd
and carry genomically enhanced breed-leading EPDs. All bulls are evaluated for Top Dollar
Angus and the Premium Red Baldy program. In order for bulls to carry the Top Dollar Angus badge they must meet required genetic specifi cations that
place them in the top 25% on growth and carcass traits. In order to qualify for Premium Red Baldy, a bull needs to be in the top 50% of the breed for
the HerdBuilder index. Seventy-fi ve percent of the bulls offered qualify for Top Dollar Angus and all but six qualify for Premium Red Baldy. This is quite a
testament to the strength and versatility of the bulls available in this year’s sale.
When going through the catalog, be aware that Red Angus EPDs are now calculated using the new genetic evolution software, Biometric Open Language
Tools, known as BOLT. The BOLT analysis is able to use pedigree, performance and genomic information simultaneously to calculate EPDs, thus enabling
producers to make more informed, lower risk selection decisions. With the new BOLT calculations, we have seen a change in the base of some of the
EPDs, as well as some percentile re-ranking. Some took a notable shift, while others remained stable. As a result, we encourage you to not only look at
the EPDs listed, but pay attention to where the EPD ranks on a percentage basis as well, to help solidify where a bull’s particular EPDs rank within the
breed.
We are so honored to have been a part of this great breed for over 35 years. Whether you are a seasoned Red Angus cattleman or new to the breed, the
crew at Green Mountain Red Angus would like to thank you for putting your trust in our program. We hope you enjoy looking at the genetic packages
offered here as much as we enjoyed putting this information together!
